Communication coaching

because Good Communication is the key to meaningful connection

Let me ask you a question…

How long have you been waiting for things to change in your life and relationships?

Months? Years? Decades?

If you’re nodding your head right now – please know, you’re not alone.

I am a big believer that we change when we are ready

(and that there is no shame in how long it might take us to arrive at ready!)

But Let’s be honest – change is scary and often times we expect others to do the heavy lifting, hoping they will read our minds, “just know” what we want and need, and so we wait for THEM to change.

We wait and we wait and we wait…

Aren’t you tired of waiting? Haven’t you waited long enough?

How much longer are you willing to wait for everyone else to “get it?”

Well, I have some exciting news – today is the day you can stop waiting and empower yourself to make the changes that you want and need in your life!

What if you could step back from taking all the responsibility for everyone in your life?

What if you could ask for the support you need, when you need it? (and get it!)

What if your interactions felt more fulfilling and meaningful, rather than draining and burdensome?

What if you were able to accept that not everything has to go perfectly?

What if your needs were finally prioritized?

What if you could finally have those conversations with your partner that have been to scary to have until now?

If you’re scoffing with disbelief at these possibilities, I get it.

Perhaps you lost hope a while ago that this could be how you live and communicate.

Maybe you’re thinking about those relationships in your life that seem impossible to set boundaries in?

I assure you – change is possible. But don’t just take my word for it – Here’s Mary’s story…

Mary came to me needing help setting boundaries that were decades overdue.

At first, she expressed a great deal of doubt about being able to implement boundaries and finally set herself free from the dysfunctional dynamics or her relationship. Like, for many of us, Mary’s fear of conflict kept her from having the difficult, but necessary conversations and that ultimately took a major toll on her wellbeing.

After 6-weeks this is what she had to say:

“A breakthrough for me was selecting terms for my Compass of Values. If I ever get a tattoo, this will be it. Katie’s guidance through this process brought clarity and strength…”

In a short period of time, Mary’s motivation and confidence to make meaningful change outweighed her fear of conflict. By the end of six weeks, she highlighted the value this experience has brought to her life:

“Somehow, it’s hard to pay for intangible things or admit you can’t figure things out. But. If you’ve hit a wall, you’re repeating behaviors, that’s a cost to Time. For me, Katie’s educated, purposeful guidance – presented with grace and even humor- brought new techniques for communication and the clarity to pursue them. I didn’t know this could happen. If you’re reading this, I do hope for better days for you. It can happen.”

The primary reason Mary waited so long for change was because she didn’t know it could happen. That things COULD be different. That life WOULD be better.

But communication coaching made Mary’s life better (quickly) and it can do the same for you!

Communication Coaching FAQ

Coaching is not mental health counseling. Coaching focuses on the present, while counseling includes diving into the past. Since our past often informs our present, we won’t deny what’s gotten you to the current struggle(s), but our focus will continue to be on the present issues you’d like to work on and future goals you’d like to achieve.

Another big difference is that clinical counseling can only be offered to those in the state(s) a clinician is licensed in (for me, that’s Maryland, USA). Coaching allows me to offer my support, expertise, and ethical practices to anyone, anywhere!

Coaching sessions usually range between 30-60 minutes, but can vary depending on your needs and the terms of the coaching agreement. The frequency will also be determined in the coaching agreement and current coaching packages available. Coaching packages start at 5 sessions and increase based on need.

The free 20-min consultation comes first. That is when we can discuss what I do, what you need, and if I’m the right helper for your needs.

Our first session will be all about creating a coaching plan that fits your personal goals. You’ll share background on who you are and the current struggles you want to address. We will focus on goal setting and building motivation!

From there, we get to work applying the effective, skill-building techniques I’ve gathered over the past 8 years. We will be measuring your progress along the way and adjust our approach as needed to optimize your results.

Communication is woven throughout our lives. All living things find ways to communicate with the world around them. Therefore, effective communication skills are vital to not only our happiness, but to our survival. When we struggle to effectively communicate, it can negatively impact many areas of our lives – cost us job opportunities, intimate relationships, connection to family and community, and even jeopardize basic needs, like our safety.

Luckily, there’s been TONS of research done on the different ways humans communicate via facial expressions, micro-expressions, non-verbals (ie: gesturing and posturing), verbal (language) and para-verbal (inflection, tone, etc.) cues. That research has allowed us to learn what effective vs. ineffective communication behaviors look like and develop skills to help us practice more helpful communication behaviors.

So, If you…

Have a difficult time choosing what to say or focusing when you’re trying to communicate

Struggle with non-verbals, like how much eye-contact to use or how close to be to someone

Find yourself using passive-aggressive behaviors like sarcasm or the silent treatment

Feel too shy or passive to engage socially, ask for what you need, or say no when you want or need to

Find yourself expecting others to “read between the lines” and feeling resentful when they don’t

Often get feedback that you’re intimidating or too confrontational

Have a hard time working with others in a team-setting; find your contributions are often unheard, misunderstood, or dominate discussions

Want to take on more leadership roles, but struggle with assertivness or public speaking

…Communication coaching might be a great tool for you!

Improving your communication helps to minimize (but not eliminate) conflict. It is important to be aware that sometimes setting boundaries between yourself and others will increase internal distress and the potential for interpersonal conflict.

Communication coaching is focused entirely on what you are willing to change about how you communicate – no judgment or pressure to makes changes you don’t feel ready for!

That being said, Katie can help you weigh the pros and cons of your goal choices if you feel unsure about taking steps toward change.
